ABSTRACT
Poly-aerylonitrile (PAN/phenolic-based carbon/carbon composites manufactured by the wet layup method are potential materials for the application in high-performance structures. However, the formation and development of cracks during the carbonization step affects both the microstructure and phase composition of PAN/phenolic-based carbon/carbon composites to a great extent. Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) methods are being used in research facilities and industry to inspect defects for various materials and structures including composite materials. The correlation of physical and chemical properties with structural characteristic is important for preparation of C/C-SiC and C/C-Cucomposites. The change of density, porosity and specially the microstructural evolution of the composites were analyzed. The structural characteristics of the composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Archimedes’e method.
